Funnily enough, the NYFCC do have more in common with the Oscars than LAFCA, in terms of history and precedentin the old days. They are much more likely to pick the same film as LAFCA than they are with the Academy. That's why they choose pure schlock most of the time.
Both are good films, just different films.

I would also contend that Hannah is better than Platoon (too black & white, silly symbolism diminishes the power), and Sideways is smarter than manipulative and sometimes cliched Million Dollar Baby.
